| [death cab for cutie - the new year]
so this is the new year and i don't feel any different the clanking of crystal explosions off in the distance
so this is the new year and i have no resolution for self assigned penance for problems with easy solutions
so everybody put your best suit or dress on let's make believe that we are wealthy for just this once lighting firecrackers off in the front lawn as thirty dialogues bleed into one
i wish the world was flat like the old days then i could travel just by folding the map no more airplanes or speedtrains or freeways there'd be no distance that could hold us back
so this is the new year
[me - my life]
ahh, another year down! but doesn't every day provide another year lived since last year? hmmm, what deep thinking...
we should stop thinking about the new year's goals. they're temporary. a year is a long time, but how can you put a limit (or maybe a ridiculously extensive allotment) on something you achieve? if an end means so much to you, a goal setting marathon shouldn't occur every january 1st but rather (and quite obviously) as you continuously strive to better yourself and others.
working an 8-5 job has given me a lot of time to think (i work at a help desk--to my understanding, one of the most lax work environments someone can encounter in a white-collar setting--and i basically do actual work only about an hour every day) about what living is all about. i make great money here, especially as a college student and "intern," but what i do (or rather, don't do) is sooo unbelievably boring. in the scrap metal industry, i can understand how this is downtime as the winter season doesn't exactly promote trade, but it's not the lack of stuff to do that makes me comfortable in my chair, at my desk, and at my two work computers (one of which they gave to me...it's old, but free!!). not to disrespect any of my "colleagues" here, this place just isn't for me. they help people with computer problems and in moments of spare time do whatever internet browsing they want (thank you, digg!), but i hope this is not "it" for me.
emily (my greco-italian real-life girlfriend, if you didn't know) is pretty spunky compared to me, from her freaky ability to recall nearly all of her dreams (and tell me on a nearly-daily basis) to mentioning random questions of life. as unique as i think she may be, she's not the only to have fathomed how amazing it would be to know what you're purpose is. if only the idealistic wishes of being an astronaut or a firefighter burned that olympic-sized torch in your soul for the rest of your days. are we not happy with school, work, or life in general because it does not satisfy us? or is it because we don't satisfy ourselves? or maybe even something entirely different that my 18 year old nub brain can't imagine...?
par with all my thinking (and the few things i write, namely required essays at school), i don't really know where this is going. i guess i just want everyone to really pursue what they love. i wish i could say that nothing holds me back from dreaming, but i feel that i, like others, are (un)consciously attached to financial considerations. of course, we need to be responsible for our future livelihood, but is it comfortable to think of dealing with a doctor, lawyer, professor, consultant, etc. who'd rather be somewhere else? maybe out fishing, or being a full-time artist or parent? you wouldn't like that, so don't be it either. if that's the case, you will be cheating yourself as much as you cheat others. like me, you may not be completely sure of what you want to achieve in life... but don't give up and believe that enough is enough. always strive for more.
back to the whole goal-setting thing. i'm not a great person with getting tasks done. i'm a chronic procrastinator... i have no defense. but i hate the badgering of what people's new year's resolutions are or should be (although recently, it doesn't seem AS big of a deal). if stuff needs to get done, why wait a year around to start? you don't set a goal for every homework assignment or work project at the beginning of the year, you take things as they come. don't start dieting "next week," don't start to work "after this show/in an hour/after this round (my case when i play counter-strike)." just get your biznez done, and do it now!
bye bye xanga... maybe i'll write again in a year =D

| i totally forgot that xanga even existed.

| soooooooo the band finally has a name!! we decided on Aegis, though it's still somewhat up in the air and not completely resolved... but we had to pick something quickly because of our show on the 18th at Cicero's!!! you can see us in some saint louis periodicals as "verbatim" because that's what we had previously decided on as a temporary name. i'm just gonna post all the stuff i had from the facebook event onto here... i hope you can come! =)

Alex
King. Brian Pincus. David Kim. Michael Mattina. We've been together
since this past April, and now we finally have something (OUT OF
SCHOOL) for you! For now--and possibly forever--we've dubbed our
instrumental quartet as "Aegis" at our first show in the U.City Loop's
very own Cicero's!! >Doors open at 8:30pm, show starts at 9:00pm. >Tickets are $8 ($5 for 21+). >Show lineup (the 95% likely order): +Aegis +The Principles +TBA... There
may or may not be a third band playing with us that evening, so in that
case we can play a set ranging from 30-55ish minutes. For the
fellow high school kiddies: we're 95% certain that we will be playing
first ... so you may not have to worry about getting home at midnight
on a school night because you can just leave after seeing us! *If you need directions you can mapquest the address or call the number above *If you're a bit hesitant to go, listening to these shotty recordings hopefully won't discourage you from supporting us!!! http://hs.facebook.com/shared.php?posted&id=1307610222(we
aren't crippled monkey... and don't worry, we know that in a lot of the
videos dave just flat out sounds terrible and the volume is not
consistent--we're working on it... we promise)

| so the band (with the name still to be decided) is gonna have a busy busy schedule in january! nothing is set yet, but we have prospective shows at the loft and cicero's. also, at any time we may play at alex's dad's restaurant and we may also open for Javier Mendoza band at various venues (a pretty well established hispanic band that is apparently very popular in saint louis)... great, great, great, great, great news! | | |
